In speaker news, we’re very pleased to announce that Jesse Hirsh will be delivering a talk from the red rostrum at FutureRuby.
There’s less than a handful of speakers to be announced now, all guaranteed to make you swoon.
A reminder that the employment.nil? The First Toronto Ruby Job Fair is upon us in virtually a week. Whether you’re a student, a freelance Rubyist, or even a small company – register, decorate a poster board and get in on this unique opportunity for recognition and hire.
As stated in our last post, this event has garnered a substantial amount of media attention, and several companies have already confirmed that they are participating or attending the Ruby Job Fair to procure new talent on site. Details and registration here.
Finally, there are roughly 15 days left to procure regular priced FutureRuby tickets. As we have under 5 comrade spots left (and no more will be opening up), we adamantly suggest you register this week if your trip planning includes your better half.
More speakers and party updates to come – we’ll be posting talks on the website come June 8th.

Today’s updates are an assortment of blithe bits and bites:
Articulating.
We’re happy to announce that Adam Blum (of Rhodes fame) is one of the newest inductions to the FutureRuby speakers line-up. Go say привет! (That’s ‘hi!’ since people have been asking about our Cyrillic mystique.)
Repeating.
FAILcamp plans are starting to ferment real nice, and we’re excited to amalgamate the Great Hall of Rubyists with some of Toronto’s finest for one lemony night.
Those planning on arriving early for FutureRuby should sign up swiftly to ensure their place at the yacht club. Toronto denizens not attending FutureRuby may have already had their first FAIL in procuring one of those elusive free tickets, but a few Supporter Tickets (aka PWYC) still remain.
Alternatively, while FutureRuby volunteer slots have been off the market for awhile, we’d love an extra few pairs of helping hands for FAILcamp. Send offers of support to meghann@unspace.ca and you’ll be well taken care of.
Applauding.
Aside from the usual suspects, there’s been a lot of people working hard behind the scenes since the inception of FutureRuby. While there are too many helpful comrades to name (you know who you are) we have to publicly extol our illustrators and designers Stefan Grambart and Unspace’s own Wesley Hodgson for all the thought and benevolent O/T they’ve put into creating Rubyist propaganda.
Make sure to give them thanks when you receive your killer swag.

In another daily dose, we’ve welcomed Giles Bowkett (Archaeopteryx/ENTP) back to take his rightful place on the FutureRuby soapbox.
Gile’s RubyFringe talk ranked #1 in 2008. Just sayin’.
We’ve also issued Paul Dowman (EC2/Gigpark) a golden speakers ticket. Send him letters of your support and solidarity.
For our RSS chums, you can view the full speaker roster to date here. More to come.

Our good friend & RubyFringe alumnus Dan Grigsby has an important announcement for you :

In an act of solidarity and comradeship, FutureRuby and Mobile Orchard, are pleased to present: Beginning iPhone Programming For Rubyists, a developers’ workshop.
Spend the Thursday and Friday before the conference learning to build polished, ready-to-ship iPhone applications. Dan Grigsby, a speaker at RubyFringe last year, will be teaching a discounted, adapted-for-Rubyists version of Mobile Orchard’s renown beginning iPhone programming class. Walk in Thursday morning with no previous Objective-C, Cocoa, or iPhone development experience; walk out — and over to FAILcamp — having built apps that incorporate location, motion and email. On Friday you’ll build table/ navigation style apps (e.g., Apple’s Mail and Contacts app) with persistent data storage, hybrid web/native apps, apps that consume ActiveResource RESTful APIs, and more. The class mixes practical project examples with Objective-C and Cocoa-Touch fundamentals like memory management, protocols and delegates, properties and categories.
All are equal, but some more than others: seats are available on a first-come, first-serve basis and fill up quickly. Normally priced at $1200USD, FutureRuby attendees who register before June 9 pay $699; $799USD thereafter. For details, or for details, visit http://www.mobileorchard.com/future

Welcome to the new home of FutureRuby! You have a lot of reading to catch up on, so we’ll spare you any rhetoric:
- We’re penning the last names into our itinerary of speakers right now – for today’s daily dose, we’re pleased to announce that Molly Holzschlag will be bringing her greatness to the FutureRuby podium.
- Talk summaries will start appearing on the site to tease you starting June 6th, since you keep asking.
- Volunteer positions are now 100% maxed out. Thanks so much to everyone, past and present, who has wrote us to offer a helping hand.
- Red Alert: There are a mere 48 days until the kick-off of FutureRuby. Regular priced tickets are available until sell-out, or until June 15th – whichever comes first.
Our American comrades should note that the exchange rate currently works magic in the form of a $100 discount. And finally – FAILcamp and Comrades slots are almost non-existent. Act now!

We’re trying something new here in Toronto: a Rubyist job expo with no computers allowed.
In a push to draw attention to the amazing Ruby scene here, we’re promoting this event as an opportunity for businesses and start-up entrepreneurs to come and have casual conversations with dozens of Ruby developers. We can tell them in our own words why we love Ruby, and they can hire us because of our energy and personality… not because we have the right acronyms on our resume.
If you’re a Ruby developer — student, freelancer, or even a small company — please consider decorating a poster board and getting in on the action. We’re getting a significant amount of local media attention, and there’s only 40 spots available.
You can sign up at http://rubyjobfair.ca/ and keep an eye on #rubyjobfair on Twitter.

We’ve got another exciting event TBA in a mere day or so. In the meantime, we couldn’t resist feeding the fire with a few exciting developments on the sidelines:
Here’s another daily dose of speakers we’ve proudly snagged for the podium:
Nathaniel Talbott
Foy Savas
Misha Glouberman
Ron and Damen Evans
You’ll be able to start taking in speakers bio’s and sneak previews of talks next Monday. Where, you say? We’re proudly putting the finishing touches on our official website, so prepare for the blanks to be filled at the start of the next workweek.
Finally, last year we had far too much fun with the HackFest we co-presented with EngineYard last year for RubyFringe, and decided to create a redux event with added flare. The newest edition to the Augusta Bloc Party is HotShot Gallery, where we’ll be curating installations and multimedia exhbiits in the front, and a serious hackers cove in the back – the reverse mullet of parties, if you will. We’ll be running an espresso bar in the venue to keep you wired, catering to the whims of your munchies, and the lovely staff at HotShot will be running the usual bar rail goodies.
Keep in mind that there’s a Russian Navy-themed night with performers, DJ’s and drinks going on across the street at The Boat in glorious synchronicity. We seriously can’t emphasize booking your flight out on Monday the 13th enough.
And the Comrade/Companion track is running out of tickets. Run, run.

We’re working around the clock on self-imposed conference deadlines this week – while engineering awesome doesn’t leave much time for blog posts, here’s a new installment of captivating comrades we’re proud to call FutureRuby speakers:
Francisco Tolmasky
David Berube
Anita Kuno
Collin Miller
Joseph Wilk
Fruits of our current labour to be presented next week, alongside speaker update No. 3.
